The Bible does not tell us how to pray for our future partner, but we can draw inspiration from the prayer of Jesus to make sure that our prayer is well balanced.
In Matthew 6, we find the advice given by Jesus concerning prayer. First, prayer must be a moment of total intimacy and transparency between us and God. It must not be a competition of words between Christians; a way of asserting oneself (v. 5-8). Our prayer must also be a way to free ourselves from our worries. After giving our needs to God, we should be at peace, confident in the love and power of God (v.25-33).
So what should our prayers include when we are looking for a spouse?
“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” (v.9 KJV)
We must first recognize who we pray to. He is not a genie in a bottle at our service. He is our Father, we owe him this respect. But also, he is our Father and not an insensible god. He knows us by heart and He loves us without limits. Let us, therefore, always begin our prayers by giving him the respect and the honor that belongs to him. What better way, when we start a conversation with someone important than, to begin with, praise and thanks? You certainly have things for which you are grateful even in your celibacy.
“ Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” (v.10)
Before presenting our own needs, let’s pray for his needs! Let us pray for the lost souls, for our churches, for peace, in short, for his reign to be established on this earth. God has given particular talents to you, so that you may fulfill a specific part of His Kingdom. Pray for this, for your ministry. Let him show you what you should do today, while you are still single, to make his influence grow in this world.
“Give us this day our daily bread.” (v.11)
After having put God back on his throne, after putting his needs before your own, it is time to present him your needs. There is nothing wrong with being single, but it is also quite legitimate to want to get married. If you have this desire, tell God! He knows your desires and your needs, but when you tell him, you put those in his hands. He does not ask for anything better!
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” (v.12)
Once you have asked God to help you find a partner, be humble enough to let him show you what you should change in your life to become better. Maybe you still have grudges against your “ex”? Do you need to forgive yourself for a past mistake? God may show you that you don’t have a good attitude or behavior and that it is time to repent. Let God correct you and free you.
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” (v.13)
Finally, ask God to show you the pitfalls that lie in wait for you. By asking him, you will automatically remain on your guard. “Help me to keep my heart”, you might say. And of course, always end your prayer time with gratitude and praise.
The prayer of Jesus is certainly not a magic formula, but it is an inspiration to keep us balanced and focused on what is truly essential.
