God will never ask us to do anything that could make us sick. He will never launch us into a project that would take us into debt. Likewise, He will never guide us into a relationship that would break our heart.
If we made the decision to give our lives to God, and we accepted the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross to give us a new life, we are officially adopted, we are children of God. (If you have not done so, do it right away! This other article can help you.)
God is a good father, who wants the best for His children. He cannot prevent all our sufferings on this Earth, but when we choose to follow what He says, we can rest assured that He will never let us be destroyed. “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body” (2 Corinthians 4: 8-10 NKJV).
The previous passage says that we carry the death of Jesus in our body: it means that we are no longer masters of ourselves. When we gave our lives to God, it’s not just for Him to save us trouble, but for Him to become our master, our Lord so that He tells us where to go and what to do. “But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit [a]to holiness, and the end, everlasting life” (Romans 6:22 NKJV). As children of God, we must constantly pray to stay in the will of God. We cannot act as our flesh desires, but we must follow God’s line of conduct. Not because God is a dictator, but because He knows all things and He knows what is the best way to get to our destination and what is the best course of action to be successful.
This truth applies to financial and professional decisions in our life, in the pursuit of our calling to grow the kingdom of God, but also in choosing a partner. Do you want to get married? Ask God what path to take, what actions to do toward that goal. If you follow the direction of God, walk in holiness, and always let Him be the priority, you will go in the right direction.
You will, of course, have conflicts, because we are all different and we all have imperfections. You will also have disappointments because we often have unrealistic expectations. But if you submit to the will of God as it is described in the Bible, you will never have a broken heart. If your heart is in the hands of God, no one will be able to crush it down. It is when you go your own way and keep control of your love life, that God cannot protect it. He will comfort you later if you cry in his presence; He will teach you what you have done wrong if you are teachable. But God can only protect what belongs to Him. Does your heart belong to God?
When you give your whole life to God (which includes your love life), you will keep the perspective of eternity. Yes, your marriage lasts all your life on Earth, but your life does not stop with what happens on Earth. If you are a child of God, your life will continue well after your physical death. Keeping this perspective in mind, you can put being married back in the right place in your priorities. Your future marriage must not be at the expense of your eternity! When you are married, on difficult days, you will remember that marriage is temporal and your salvation is eternal. You will work at your wedding from another perspective. If something happened to your marriage, you will be sad, but not completely devastated because you know that your life does not stop there.
God loves you and He does not want His children to have a broken heart. No father wants to see his children go through devastating sorrows. He gave us an instruction manual to protect us - let’s follow it!
