Because looking for a partner is part of the flesh, in the visible world, we often forget that there are also spiritual issues in our search.
We sing beautiful songs to the Lord and we pray to God with faith, even if we do not see him. We are able to read His promises in the Bible and imagine ourselves getting them - this is called hope. But if God is real and He wants the best for us, we must not forget that his enemy is just as real and that his desire is to see us fail. “The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly” (John 10:10 WEB).
God wants your future marriage to be strong, well grounded and blessed in every way. He wants your family to be a model of faith, love, and life for this society. For this, you have to choose a good partner who will share the same passion for Christ and the same vision to build a family focused on biblical principles. The enemy knows very well that such a family is a threat to his destructive plans, so what will he do? His strategy is very simple: to prevent you from finding a person according to the heart of God!
His tools are simple, but unfortunately effective. He knows that singles are sometimes discouraged by not finding anyone, so he just has to blow you other lies to crush you completely. He has experience: he is the father of lies (John 8:44)! When your thoughts depress you, realize that they do not come from God! They may be the result of your own reasoning, but they may also come from the enemy. Do not accept them! “Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things” (Philippians 4:8 WEB).
In nature, predators always start by isolating their prey, because, without their group, they become weak and easy to catch. The same is true in the spiritual world. “Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8 WEB). As we are much weaker when we are isolated, the enemy will do everything to keep you away from your brothers and sisters, and your spiritual authorities. “There is no one for you in this church, go elsewhere …”
He will make you believe that there are no Christians Singles and so then you can date a non-believer. “But she has beautiful values”, he tries to make you believe. But if they do not believe in God, if they do not have a personal relationship with Christ, how will you continue the calling that God has put on your life by their side? There are many logical reasons for not dating an unsaved person, but there are also spiritual reasons to consider. God saved you to spread His Kingdom! You have specific talents to put at His disposal, people who need your testimony to give their lives to Christ. The enemy knows that your blessings are in the narrow way (Matthew 7:13-14) and he will do anything to get you out of it. Do not be naive! The enemy wants to destroy you, and he can use your desire to marry you to get away from God.
Okay, we have an enemy who makes war on us … what do we do now? Defend yourself! “Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace; above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:13-17 WEB). You have here a list of each weapon for each part of your singleness. The truth to protect your moral values, salvation to protect your thoughts, justice to protect your heart, zeal to protect your calling, faith to cover all areas of your life and of course, the word of God to fight back.
We are not talking about directly attacking the enemy but running passionately into the calling that God has given you. Jesus is your best weapon: live close to His heart, constantly in His presence. Take time for praise and worship: this is the weak point of our enemy! And by elevating the name of Jesus, placing God on the throne of your heart, your perspective will change and you will realize that you are on the winning team. By following His directions, you can only be blessed and happy.
