What is God building in your life right now? Sometimes we have projects we are working on but rarely do we stop to think about what the Spirit of God is doing in us.
We sometimes forget what the new birth is. We call ourselves saved, or Christians, and we try to do good works, to follow what the Bible teaches. But this type of Christianity is often centered on ourselves, on what we have to do. Of course, we have a mission to accomplish. But we are not the only ones! God also has a mission to accomplish in us. However, if we forget this dimension, we can miss God’s plan for our life.
Many Christians find comfort in 2 Corinthians 5:17. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (NKJV). Often this verse is seen as a second chance in life where we have the opportunity to make better decisions. Now, when we read the verse right again, we find here that we are in Christ, a new creation. A concept also cited later. “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation” (Galatians 6:15 NKJV). Paul regrets that the new Christians in that region are forced to follow religious rules. He sends them this letter to remind them that they are justified in God, that they are now a creature of God and therefore a creature who must follow God alone, not religious rules.
God did not save us to give us the possibility to start living again in the same way as the first one, which is based on our knowledge, even if our knowledge is now biblical! What God told us was that our first life experience, which was to follow our wisdom, was leading us in the wrong direction. To avoid a terrible end, God gave us a second life, but that one is very different from the first. That is a life where we will now follow what the Holy Spirit tells us to do. It is no longer us who builds our life, we are the construction of God.
So what is God building in you right now? What is different in your life that does not come from your resolutions, but comes from God Himself. What’s different in your life, compared to the past year, that you can’t take credit for? “That’s not me, it is God …”
God is working with us on this new construction. “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9 NKJV). But it’s not for us to say what needs to be built now, let alone how it needs to be built. We are not the architects! We must let the potter work in us because we no longer belong to ourselves. “For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s” (Romans 14:8 NKJV).
God may be building a humble woman in you, breaking your pride. Maybe God is making a generous man out of you, breaking your insecurity. Maybe God is making you a sanctified single and solid in your identity. What is God creating in you right now? If you are unable to identify what God is changing, transforming, or creating in you right now, take the time to question yourself. Have you started to live your Christian life your way, according to your wisdom? Are you moving forward with your plans, even if they are for the glory of God, on your own, without listening to the voice of God? Are you serving God instead of letting God use you?
What is God building in you and through you right now?
