When we give our lives to God, not only are we freed from eternal death, but we inherit all kinds of promises. It should make us radiant! Yet some Christians still walk with sad faces.
The Bible has several ways of explaining our new life. We were dead, and we came to life (Ephesians 2:5). We were slaves, and we are now children of God (Romans 8:15). We were in darkness, and we are now in the light. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8 NKJV). In short, we are no longer like the lost world, we are a different race, and our difference should be obvious!
Those who are not saved do not have an infinitely rich Father to provide for their needs (Philippians 4:19). So they have to do all kinds of shenanigans, accept all kinds of questionable contracts, get bogged down in all kinds of debt to get everything their flesh desires. Children of God do not worry about money. They are happy with what they have, and when they need a financial miracle they know God will not forsake them. “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5 NKJV).
Those who are not saved have nothing to fill their loneliness. All single people can have evenings alone, but those who do not have the Spirit of God feel a void that cannot be filled. They do not have the listening ear of their Heavenly Father (Psalm 116:2), they do not have a supportive community (Ephesians 4:2), and they do not have the hope of supernatural intervention to come and meet their needs (Isaiah 43:19).
Those who are not saved realize their helplessness in the face of their circumstances and live in discouragement. They feel lacking and live in hunger. They fail in life’s challenges and live in sadness. But not the children of God! They can fall and get up (James 5:15), and they can take refuge in a fortified tower (Psalms 9:10).
Those who are not saved have no hope of a life in Heaven. They, therefore, live in fear of death and in fear of being the victim of all kinds of misadventures. But not those who gave their lives to Christ. We know that our life is in his hands (Psalm 55:23), that nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39), and that nothing can take our name from the book of life (Revelation 3:5).
So how is it that Christian singles still walk with a defeatist attitude? How can children of God still be looking for questionable solutions to their problems? Why, now that we have been born again, would we still be living in fear, worry, discouragement, loneliness, or condemnation? What good is our salvation for us if we walk like the world? Not only if we walk in lust and covetousness, but also if we still walk in discouragement and worry? We are supposed to be different from the world. Not only are we supposed to act differently, not to follow our flesh, but we should also be radiant with joy and filled with hope (Proverbs 31:25).
Our salvation should be attractive in the eyes of unbelievers. We should make those around us thirsty as salt does. “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men” (Matthew 5:13 NKJV). If your salvation is of no use to you, something is wrong! If your salvation does not help you lift your head even in your singleness, it is time to draw closer to God and put Him back on the throne of your heart.
