Then here are some questions to discuss:
We all know that physical appearance is something that changes a lot over time. And so, that we shouldn’t rely too much on it… But let’s be honest with each other, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being very important and 1 I would choose with your eyes closed), how much do you rate the importance of the appearance of a person in the choice of a future partner?
Do you think that physical appearance is a more important criterion for men or for women? And why, according to you?
In Christian circles, sometimes we are told not to trust in the look, as verse 1 Samuel 16.7 says. Do you think Christians should indeed be LESS influenced by appearance?
Have you ever been told not to look at the appearance of a potential partner based on the verse of Isaiah 53.2? What have you been told in your Christian circle about looks? And do you agree with what you heard?
Have you ever been rejected by a potential partner because of your looks? How did you feel and how did you heal from this painful story?
How does God see us? Read Psalms 139.14. When we believe this, when we have good self-esteem, we naturally become good looking or beautiful. Why do you think? How does our self-esteem influence our outward appearance?
If the futile search for a perfect appearance is a form of idolatry, and therefore a sin, this does not mean that Christians should look like a castaway! What can we do to take care of our appearance, to “look our best,” without falling into pride or comparison?
What does it show a future partner if we take the time to “look good” or beautiful?
Some people say: “They will accept me as I am, I will not change for someone else!” What is right and wrong about this attitude?
Appearance is not fair to our romantic relationships. Read Genesis 41.14. Here, Joseph “dressed up” before going to see Pharaoh. Do you think that our appearance can also influence our testimony? How much care should we take in our appearance when representing the Kingdom of God? And why?
Some prayer points to conclude:
Pray for healing of the heart for those who have been rejected because of their appearance;
Ask the Holy Spirit for help to raise our esteem;
And also ask Him to help us to always be at our best, without pride.
