Then here are some questions to discuss:
We often hear modern motivators encourage us not to worry about what people think of us. In most cases, they are right. How harmful can it be to worry about what people think of us… in a professional context, for example?
Read 1 Samuel 13:5-14. Based on Saul’s mistake here, how could it be harmful to care about what people think of us when God asks us to do something?
We should not worry about what unbelievers think of our faith, because they cannot understand it, as 1 Corinthians 1:18 says. Have you ever suffered from the mockery of those around you because of your faith? And if so, how did you react: did you maintain your faith or did you compromise to stop the teasing?
It is true that God is the only one who truly sees the motives of our hearts, and therefore, we should not judge our brothers and sisters. But, how can it become dangerous to have the attitude “Bah! I don’t care what people think of me. God sees my heart, and that’s all that matters!” ?
Read Proverbs 22:1. Does having a good reputation matter? What is it to have a good reputation?
To be able to say that we have a good reputation, we have to let people judge our actions, right? Why is it difficult to accept that others examine us?
Read 1 Peter 2:11-12. What do you understand from this verse? What is your interpretation?
Read Philippians 2:15. Having a good reputation is one thing, being blameless… it’s a whole other level! Does being irreproachable mean being perfect? Is it even possible to achieve this?
As a single person, if you are looking for a partner, is their reputation important to you?
If we have done a lot of bad things and now have a bad reputation in our church, what can we do to change that?
Some prayer points to conclude:
Let us pray for the forgiveness of our sins
Let us ask for help to repair our mistakes and strengthen ourselves in our weaknesses
