Then here are some questions to discuss:
For you, is it easier to talk about your faults or your qualities? Why?
Read Galatians 6:4. We should be proud of our talents! Name the talents God has given you. Are you using your talents to grow the Kingdom of God? If yes, how; if not why?
Using our talents to serve God is a good way to stay humble. Why?
Read Luke 18:10-14. In this passage, the Pharisee was very proud of himself. But, the way he expressed it was not appropriate. Why? What does this passage teach you about expressing your talents?
Read 2 Corinthians 7:4 and 2 Corinthians 10:8. How is it different for Paul, in the way he expresses his pride? (he “glorifies” himself… it’s a bit like bragging, isn’t it?)
What is the difference between “being proud of yourself” and “being prideful”? How can we celebrate our successes without appearing proud?
Sometimes, after a good teaching or a good time of praise, people will go to congratulate the pastor or the worship leader, and the latter will answer: “Ah! All the glory goes to God!” Yet it was he who taught or sang! What could be a better answer to give when we receive compliments on a job well done?
Read Philippians 2:3. How can we stay humble without crushing our self-esteem? How can we view others as “superior” to us, without feeling inferior?
For a single person, why is it important to celebrate our strengths and acknowledge our weaknesses?
Now that we’ve discussed this topic: do you think you have a healthy approach to your talents? And if not, what are you going to do to change that?
Some prayer points to conclude:
Let’s start by asking God for forgiveness if we have been proud or the opposite: if we could not accept our strength.
Let’s take the time to glorify God for our strengths and ask Him to use us to make His Kingdom grow.
