Then here are some questions to discuss:
Tell us a little about yourself. Do you enjoy helping others? What inspires you to help others? And who do you enjoy serving the most?
Do you ever take on too many requests? What are the signs that you are doing too much, that you have taken on too many commitments to help others?
Some people are very helpful, but sometimes they are motivated by what is called the “savior complex”. They need to help others in order to feel valued. Do you know people like this? In your opinion, how is this “savior complex” harmful to the person who has it?
This “savior complex” is often more popular among men than among women (who sometimes have the “victim complex”). Why are men more likely to be like this?
In love, those who have the “savior complex” will tend to fall in love with people who have a lot of challenges. But once they have “fixed” the person’s problems, the person abandons them for another partner. How can we not fall in love with a person we are helping?
This doesn’t mean never helping someone we are romantically interested in. But what boundaries should we set for ourselves so we don’t become too invested in another person’s life?
“I am not the savior, Jesus is the Savior.” What does this statement inspire in you? How might this statement change your choices about helping someone?
Sometimes when we think we are helping someone, our help doesn’t help them grow, overcome their own challenges. How can we support someone who is going through a challenge without solving the challenge for them?
Just because we have the time or talent to meet a need doesn’t mean God is asking us to meet that need. How do you know if it’s up to us to respond or if we should leave room for someone else?
When we really don’t feel like helping, is that a sign that we shouldn’t do it? Explain your answer.
Some prayer points to conclude:
Name someone you know who is experiencing a challenge, and let’s pray together about that challenge.
Ask God to reveal to us what we should do, or not do, to help others.
