Then here are some questions to discuss:
Our theme today is the danger of “hyper-spiritualizing” everything. It’s good to include God in everything we do, but what do you think it would be to “hyper-spiritualize”? And why is it dangerous to do that?
Hyper-spiritualizing also means taking verses out of context. What verses have you heard taken out of context? And why is it important to put verses back into context?
Proverbs 18:22 says that a man who finds a wife obtains favour from the Lord. Does that mean we don’t have the favour of the Lord when we’re single?
Along the same lines, Psalm 127:3 says that children are a reward from the Lord. So, if an unmarried Christian couple has sex before marriage and the woman becomes pregnant, can we conclude that God has rewarded them with a child?
Read 1 Corinthians 10:13 and 2 Timothy 2:22. Is it the devil who makes us sin? What is his part, and what is our part, in the face of temptation?
In our Christian circles, we hear people say, “God told me”… But people can be wrong. How do we discern what is truly from God and what is from another source?
Can God tell a man who his wife will be? How should a woman respond to a stranger who comes to her and says, “God showed me that you will be my wife”?
Can we fast to get a life partner? Can fasting speed up the answer to our prayers?
Some singles wait for extraordinary signs from heaven before taking steps in this or that direction. God can indeed use signs, but most of the time, how does God speak to you?
For unsaved people, the hyper spiritual behaviour of some Christians can be frightening or uncomfortable. How can we be steadfast in our convictions, without pushing away those who do not yet know our God? Is this what Paul was talking about in 1 Corinthians 9:22?
Some prayer points to conclude:
May the Holy Spirit give us discernment to know if what is happening comes from God, the enemy, our flesh, or just a natural consequence.
May the Holy Spirit give us the strength to take the right steps in the right direction.
