Then here are some questions to discuss:
You will not be asked here if you are liars, there are no liars in our groups, right? So let’s talk about “others.” Why do “other” people tell lies? When is it difficult to tell the truth?
Is it always better to tell the truth, or can we sometimes afford a little lie? And if it is okay, under what circumstances would it be acceptable?
Is not telling the truth, that is, not saying anything at all, a form of lying? (Example: Someone asks us a question, and we change the subject instead of answering, so we don’t have to tell the truth.)
The video talked about other “forms” of lying. In Psalm 5:9, it says that we should avoid flattery. Why do you think God doesn’t like flattery?
What is the difference between flattery and a compliment? How can we tell if someone is flattering us or if they are giving us a compliment?
Another disguise for lying is joking. Proverbs 26:18-19 says that God does not like jokes that are meant to deceive others. God is not against humor, but give us examples of jokes that would not please God.
How should we respond if we discern that someone is using flattery or a joke to deceive us? Should we denounce them publicly, confront them privately, do the same thing to them in revenge, or do nothing at all?
Another form of lying is breaking our commitments, our promises. (Matthew 5:37) If you tell someone, “I promise you…”, you must do what you promise. Why does God really take seriously the promises we make to others?
Sometimes we have good intentions, we really want to do a service and we promise to do it, but we can’t do it. What can we do if we realize that we can’t keep our commitment? And what precaution should we take before making a commitment?
It’s easy to see the lies in the words of others, but it’s harder to recognize that we too do the same thing at times. Are you afraid of this verse: Matthew 12:36? How can we restrain our mouth from speaking vain words?
Some prayer points to conclude:
Let us choose to forgive and give back to God, those who have lied to us.
Let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us recognize when we lie so that we don’t do it again.
